Derry needs modern sports complex. - Derry Journal (Derry, Northern Ireland)

CALLS to build a new multimillion pound flagship sports facility at Templemore are to be discussed by Derry City Council today.

SDLP Councillor Shaun Gallagher is to table a motion urging the council to recognise 'the current inadequacies' of Templemore Sports Complex. He will also call on the local authority to prioritise the provision of 'a modern facility to meet the demands of the 21st Century'.

'The complex has been the flagship of leisure services for Derry City Council for the last 35 years and it really is showing its age now. At the minute there's a constant maintenance battle where you have old equipment and modernisation demands.

'It's time the council re-established the complex so it's worthy of the flagship tag. We either need a revamp of the entire facility, at an estimated cost of [pounds sterling]5 million, or we build a whole new sports complex.

'I just want to get the wheels in motion and see what the council officers come back with. Whatever the recommendation Derry needs an adequate flagship sports facility whether it is rebuilt or revamped,' he said.

Councillor Gallagher said the new facility opened recently in Letterkenny was an example of the type of modern sports complex needed in Derry.
